45 hectares of
olive groves, 10.000 plants belonging to this varieties:
Frantoio Leccino, Moraiolo and other native varieties. The
Montecorona estate is located in the heart of the Via Francigena and represents an ideal location for those who want to explore the splendid Umbrian territory between the famous towns of
Todi,
Assisi and
Perugia.
With its 2,000 hectares of land, the Badia and the ancient Eremo Camaldolese, is one of the
most important agricultural reality of the area. In addition to the olive trees, from which comes the
well-known DOP extra virgin olive oil, the company cultivates the famous Montecorona peaches.
Montecorona production
Stefano Belvisi, responsible of the Montecorona Estate, explains that the
harvesting of the olives used for the production of the oil takes place in a completely mechanized way through the use of state-of-the-art shakers while the
pressing is done externally but within twenty-four hours from harvesting. The
olive groves are almost all located at an altitude of 400 meters.
There are two lines of oil produced in Montecorona: one dedicated to
Italian extra virgin olive oil and one to
DOP Umbria Colli del Trasimeno marked with an annual certification. The latter is very particular: it is, in fact, the first oil to be produced from olives that are still very unripe, which give it a bitter and spicy taste.
Badia di Montecorona
Guests of the estate have the opportunity to stay at the Badia to enjoy the unspoiled nature of the
Umbrian countryside and taste the typical dishes cooked using local ingredients.
The abbey was founded by
San Romualdo who built the crypt in 1008, before founding the order of the Camaldolese. It was later enlarged with the addition of a receptive part for pilgrims, the pharmacy and the guesthouse.
It has always been connected to the hermitage located on the top of
Monte Corona and reachable via a path dating back to 1503 - called
Mattonata - which crosses the woods owned by the estate and can only be traveled on foot or by bike.
