Còlpetrone and Sagrantino, here lies the most authentic Umbria that makes you exclaim “Ò”

  • 03/05/2024

A renowned journalist, Gianluigi Basilietti, came to visit Còlpetrone and described it as follows:

At Cantina Còlpetrone beats the heart of the most authentic Umbria, the one that is recognized in an iconic wine such as 'His Majesty' Sagrantino. Here, it finds its expressions in four labels: from the passito version to the one that surprises you so much upon tasting that it elicits an exclamation of wonder - Ò - which is stylized and found impressed on the elegant bottle, the most prestigious of the cellar. While Sagrantino reigns supreme, the two reds (Montefalco DOC and Umbria IGT) and the white Grechetto complete the oenological collection beautifully displayed in the shop space just above the barrel room.

Còlpetrone cellar, the green heart of Umbria

Còlpetrone cellar resembles an old country farmhouse, perfectly integrated among the vineyards and in a breathtaking landscape that, from the hills of Gualdo Cattaneo in the province of Perugia, overlooks the entire Umbrian valley towards Montefalco, Spoleto, Foligno, and beyond, Assisi. In the spring season, if there's a place that best embodies the slogan 'Umbria, green heart of Italy,' it's this one, where Còlpetrone was built in 1995. While a visit to the winery is undoubtedly worthwhile for wine tasting, it becomes pure beauty in the journey to reach it. Arriving from Todi, Foligno, or Spoleto, you're compelled to traverse roads that seem painted with splendid colors, amidst hills and gentle valleys. These roads may not always be very easy to navigate, but they retain the typical charm of the Umbrian countryside.

Technological innovation for a winery looking towards the future

At Còlpetrone, you'll be greeted by those who are, in their own way, the true guardians of the winery, starting with agricultural expert and cellar master Giordano Giglioni. He's the man who knows even the most hidden secrets of Còlpetrone, especially the area dedicated to wine production. He speaks of the French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks almost with devotion. The temperature regulation system or the underfloor heating he describes as if to emphasize the modern soul of a winery that knows it has great growth prospects and that the best is yet to come. One who knows everything about Còlpetrone, starting from its fascinating history that has accompanied it for over thirty years, is Marco Castignani, the man behind communication and marketing at Tenute del Cerro Group, the holding company that controls Còlpetrone and the other four agricultural estates scattered between Umbria and Tuscany. The stories of Giordano and Marco trace back to distant origins to illustrate the present and envision the future (Video). They are people who, like many of their colleagues, have given everything for this winery, starting from their passion and love for wine, particularly Sagrantino. The story of Còlpetrone is, all in all, a relatively recent one, but with very solid roots. And the view from the large lawn overlooking the winery is beautiful. It feels good. It feels like the future, illuminated by a clear sky and embellished by the reflections of wines that make you say ooohhh.
